Garland 1122 size trays vs Amazon Bootstrap Farmer looking Microgreen 1020 Trays

When it comes to growing microgreens, selecting the right trays is crucial for efficiency, reduced overheads, and yield.

I am going to do a review of the Garland 1122 Microgreen Trays and a Bootstrap Farmer 1020 looking tray that I found on Amazon.

The true story is I thought I was buying a Bootstrap Farmer tray as that is what the advert stated, however, it seems it might be a fake, but is it still a good fake?

Both offer excellent quality, but they have unique differences that can impact your growing results.

I use both trays, but that is only because I bought Amazon fake Bootstrap first, and then after buying some Garland trays, I’ve bought Garland since, as I think they are a much better microgreen growing tray.

I also pick the Garland trays first before the any other tray due to the size – which means a larger yield. They offer extra strength as well, which means they don’t twist when you pick them up, and the extra holes for drainage I guess means they perform better, although I haven’t tested that to date.

Size and Yield

Garland trays are larger, measuring 56 cm x 28 cm compared to “best price” or “cheap”Amazon 1020 microgreen growing trays (that was probably my search term) at 53.5 cm x 27.5 cm. This size difference results in Garland trays offering approximately 6.6% more growing area.

Over time, this seemingly small difference can add up significantly. For instance, if you’re using 1020 trays, Garland trays could increase your overall yield by 6-7%.

For growers focused on maximising production, this added yield can mean greater profitability and efficiency.

Explore Tray Options:

Durability

Garland trays are much thicker and more heavy-duty than Amazon “Bootstrap Farmer” style 1020 microgreen trays. This added durability ensures they do not warp or bend when lifted, even when they are full of water or microgreens. For commercial growers or those handling larger volumes, this sturdiness is invaluable.

While the Amazon trays are still reliable, they may flex slightly under heavy loads. For growers who prefer lightweight trays, they remain a good option. However, if you’re seeking a tray built to withstand long-term use and heavy handling, Garland trays are the better choice.

Water Absorption and Drainage

The Garland tray has 2-3 times more drainage holes than the  Amazon trays making water absorption more efficient and allows the roots to grow through.

In contrast, I had to drill the holes in some of my Amazon trays and so there are way fewer holes, maybe 5-10 times less, and yet they still seem to perform as well as the Garland when it comes to hydration and drainage as far as I can tell.

Both trays pair well with growing media like silicone mesh or coconut coir. During cleaning, coir easily slides off both tray types, keeping maintenance simple and hassle-free.

Ease of Cleaning

Cleaning and maintaining your trays is essential for hygienic and successful growing. Both the Garland and Amazon trays are designed to be easy to clean, allowing you to reuse them for multiple growing cycles without difficulty.

Key Considerations for Garland Trays

While Garland trays offer higher yields, better durability, and improved water absorption, they may also come with a slightly higher upfront cost due to their premium build. For growers with larger operations or those prioritising long-term use, this cost is easily offset by the benefits they provide.

On the other hand, the Amazon trays are lighter and more affordable, making them ideal for beginners or those looking for a budget-friendly solution. Both trays perform exceptionally well, but the choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and goals.

Choosing between Garland and Amazon bought trays depends on your priorities. Garland trays are perfect for those seeking increased yield, durability, and efficient water management.

The cheap Amazon trays provide the extra strength and remain an excellent option for lightweight, reliable performance.
